High Water Everywhere

I've been listening to Bob Dylan a lot recently. While waiting to get his new album, I pulled out the 3rd disc of last year's compilation (Dylan) and found myself responding to High Water one day while driving home through a hard rainstorm. When you read the lyrics, it's the story of the 1924 Mississippi flood, but the refrain is what grabbed me. "It's tough out there. High water EVERYwhere."

High water IS everywhere these days, with the economy sinking and the political situation unsure. And it's not likely to change anytime soon, even with the election 10 days away. People are losing jobs, companies are retrenching, cuts are being made, and it's scary. I am not AS affected as some, really--I still have a job (at least for now), but there are challenges ahead.

I worry about loved ones--my father, who is retired and living on less and less; my friends who are not in academia. I just hope we can all weather the crisis (pun intended) okay.

High water indeed.
